POINT
1. A central location or spot in an area, place or map –
“I’ll meet you at the Point”
2. A distinctive feature or characteristic
3. A promontory or projecting topographical tip or overlook
4. A juncture or intersection

There is a place that mediates between the
vast enormity of ocean, weather, geology
and nature with the human-scaled intimacy
of settlement, city and home.
The original “gateway” and “guardian”
function of the Presidio marks this place,
and orients its main axis north-east to
bisect the waters of the Bay.

PRESIDIOPOINT
This locus, or center-point, affords
magnificent 360? views in all directions,
making sense of San Francisco’s
geography and place in Nature’s larger
milieu.

PRESIDIOPOINT
Standing still in one spot and turning
around, one can take in some of the most
magnificent views in the world -- from the
majestic Golden Gate Bridge to the west,
across to Mt. Tamalpais and Angel Island
north, to Alcatraz and the Bay east, around
to the Marina, Fort Mason and the Palace
of Fine Arts, south-east to the city with the
Trans-America Tower, and turning south
to the Presidio grounds, with the Parade
Ground and historical buildings and the
forested hilltops beyond, turning south-
west to the National Cemetery and Fort
Scott and Fort Point, back down to Crissy
Field and Crissy Marsh fronting the Bay.

This new locus, or center-point, is
afforded by extending the plateau of the
Presidio out over tunnels, projecting a
raised platform and terrace for absorbing
the full panoramic spectrum while fully
connecting the uplands to the lowlands
and the Bay. From this point radiates a
host of journeys and pathways to some of
the Park’s most spectacular destinations.
The point becomes a nexus, a gathering
place, a meeting place, a central hub.Significantly, the site lies at the
intersection of two primary journeys. One
from south to north, from the forested
hilltops to the Bay; and the other from
west to east, from the Pacific Ocean to
the City of San Francisco.

This central location allows for the
assembly and inter-connection of Park
zones, places and experiences. It becomes
at once a bridge, a connector, a distributor
and a destination unto itself.

Zooming in, the site connects, extends
and amplifies all that surrounds it. It
functions as a relatively small intervention
in an otherwise massive living body; but
an intervention that will amplify its effects
throughout the entire Park system. Like
a nucleus in a cell, or a heart in a body,
this new site literally breathes new life and
energy into an already magnificent set of
resources.
